SOCHI, RUSSIA, 14 – 22 OCT 2017 – The 19th World Festival of Youth and Students (WFYS) is a unique event, where youth from all around the world unite to develop a vision for our planet’s future. More than 30,000 active young people from 185 nations came together at the festival and spent a week shaping the main trends in global development such as politics, economy, technology, education, social, etc. The festival was organized by its founder, the World Federation of Democratic Youth (WFDY), which has consultative status with UNESCO and the National Preparatory Committee of Russia. The main events of the festival took place in Sochi Olympic Park, which hosted the Winter Olympics and Paralympics in 2014.

Selected from 50,000 applications, I represent Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and Yayasan Sukarelawan Siswa (YSS) to participate in the world event. I was one of the 1,500 participants who had the opportunity to be part of the regional program. Together with foreign participants from 44 countries, I was invited to visit Veliky Novgorod, a 1158-year-old ancient city which is the birthplace of Russia. From 15-17 Oct, the cultural and historical visit, educational tour, opening and closing ceremonies, interactive entertainment programs as well as the hospitality of the Russian volunteers and local people made me immersed in the people culture of Veliky Novgoro. I was also honoured to be interviewed by Slovij, a Russian TV station in the local city.

The scientific-technological-educational discussion programs, sports, cultural programs, youth expos, quests, fairs, creative workshops, meetings with famous people, demonstrations of scientific and technical creativity of young people, concerts of classical, jazz and modern music, film screenings, etc provided platforms for intellectual engagement, knowledge transfer and cultural exchange. From Russian President, ministers, United Nation, world champions, highprofile motivator like Nick Vujicic, CEOs, scientists, professors, engineers, IT-specialists, journalists, artists, writers, professional athletes, entrepreneurs, leaders of NGOs to student leaders, everyone comes for a common purpose of shaping the world vision and achieving international and multicultural cooperation, under the mutual interest of global peace, friendship and justice.

The world event is an agent of change, a home for unity and a festival of friendship.

I am proud to fly the Malaysia flag in the festival, one of the biggest youth event in the world. Hereby, I direct my greatest appreciation to Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and Yayasan Sukarelawan Siswa for the resolute trust and support. I perceive my participation in the World Festival of Youth and Students will add values to the vision of YSS in developing Global Student Volunteer Leader, UTM Global Plan 2012-2020 and Malaysia Education Blueprint 2015-2025.
